Sulphur is used mainly as a precursor to other chemicals. approximately 90% is converted
to sulphuric acid. the principal use for the acid is the extraction of phosphate ores for
the production of fertilizer manufacturing. Other applications of sulphuric acid include oil refining,
wastewater processing, and mineral extraction.
Sulphur dioxide from sulphur is used as a preservative for dried fruit owing to its
antimicrobial properties. It maintains the colorful appearance of the fruit and prevents rotting.
Sulphur is used in sugar cane processing for a variety of reasons during the processing
of sugar cane or the production of molasses. Most commonly, sulphur dioxide is used to
lighten the color of the molasses or to help extend its shelf life. It may also be used to help
with the processing of sugar cane when the cane has been harvested at an early stage.
Sulphur trioxide from sulphur is used to produce efficient anionic surfactants for detergents,
such as alcohol sulphates, alkyl-benzene and other aromatic sulfonates.
